Trip to the
IFI
-Santiago de
Arribas de Renedo
March 4th. That was
the date we would arrive to see a film that myself, my brother Antón, who is in
TY, and my fellow colleague, Liam Prenter Morris, had worked to create over the
course of January. I had co-directed the film as well as done the editing,
visual effects and acting. Liam had directed and written the film, along with
acting in it also and my brother had acted in it along with operating the mic
and camera. The film, by the way was called; The Simulation.
I feel I should preface by saying
that Liam and I had been making short sketches and bits on our YouTube channel
for a few months and decided to take it up a notch, by making a short film. We
decided to enrol in the Irish film festival competition, Fresh Films, mainly
thanks to our English teacher, Ms Galligan, who brought it up for us during our
film club after school.
Since the film had to be
submitted by January 24th, we had to act quickly. Writing the film
proved to be difficult as we had only three people working on it, namely us!
Finally we settled on a plot, to which a script was written up by Liam. Next
came the shooting of the film which took an entire week through our Christmas
holidays before we came back to school. The editing was then done by myself
over the course of two weeks and finally the film was submitted to the
festival.
When we received an email from
Fresh Films saying our film would be screened on March 4th we were
ecstatic! All our hard work was going to be seen by others who had been picked
in the Leinster and Dublin heats, as it was called, basically, the semi-finals.
We decided to take ten people from our class to join us in the screening of our
film and we all took a day off to go see it, with the approval of Mr. Taylor of
course!
The IFI, or the Irish Film
Institute is located on Temple Bar and we had the pleasure of viewing each film
that had been picked, twenty in total. Competition was fierce and although we
had great fun, we unfortunately did not make it to the finals.
However, we did have a wonderful
time making the film, and will continue to make others, and we feel that this
opportunity has been a great experience for us all!
March 6th 2015
In February this year, just before midterm break, students from fourth, fifth and sixth years visited Berlin on a school trip. Their excursion is detailed below!
Tuesday 12th:
"We arrived in Berlin today, and after some pizza, we started our 3 hour walking tour of Berlin. We saw where Berlin was founded, saw some of the historic courtyards and buildings and finished up at the iconic Brandenburg Tor, or Brandenburg Gate. After this, we visited the last remaining section of the Berlin Wall and saw an example of one of the watchtowers that were dotted along the wall during the Cold War. All along the Bernauer Straße, there are information posts about the Berlin Wall and the ways people tried to escape to the West."
Friday 13th:
"We started the day at the Checkpoint Charlie Museum and then moved on to an exhibit called 'the topography of terror', which looked at the Nazis and their rise and fall. That night we visited the Reichstag building, which was the highlight of the trip for many of the group. The panoramic view from the top of the building was great."
Saturday 14th:
"The day began with a trip to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. It was a chilling reminder of the horrors of WW2.
After this, we went to Potsdam City, in order to visit the San Soucci palace after lunch. The palace was an amazing sight to see, with its unique design and quirky architecture.
Throughout the trip, we used the U and S Bahn several times, and despite a few close calls, everyone survived the experience!"
"Thanks to all the teachers for bringing us on this trip, it was very enjoyable!"
